INFO zu PROMOE: Him bad man! Him real bad! Promoe, mi feel him. John John is standing with a spliff in his mouth and a glock in his underwear. He’s not wearing anything else. It’s ten o’clock in the morning and Promoe has been rapping the same song for a couple of hours now. He grabs a bag of walnuts and jumps into the rental car and heads for Bobby Digital’s legendary studio. Promoe is back in Kingston to finish his third solo album White Man’s Burden. Today he’s recording with Capleton. Businessmen in pinstriped suits shout Selassie I as we pass by on the street. Promoe hasn’t gotten this much love for his looks since the townships in South Africa. Digital B’s studio turns out to be pretty analogue. The prophet himself arrives in a 600 Benz followed by thirty turban wearing disciples in SUV’s. Capleton needs some time to lay down the hook. The adrenaline in the mic booth is about to blow the speakers. Until the computer crashes in the middle of a session. Promoe isn’t lowering his guard just yet. Solo and with Looptroop he’s done around 120 shows per year over the last three years. From Tokyo and Sydney to New York to St Petersburg. On his new album White Man’s Burden he keeps connecting continents. With Germany’s Nosliw plus Saïan Supa Crew’s Leeroy he’s got Europe’s hottest reggae- and hip hop acts lined up. Featured from Jamaica are Daville, Assassin and Capleton. Kardinal Offishall holds it down for North America. The production is as diverse as the producers featured: Embee, Large, Ledrac and Loffe. The title of the album comes from the old colonial doctrine that the white man is doomed to civilize heathens around the world. To Promoe the burden means dealing with the awareness of the fact that white men represent colonialism and exploitation. Lyrically Promoe uncompromisingly puts the underdog first. He rhymes about eurotrash, identity bewilderment, love and headaches in a way no other hip hop defines our time. The people in the studio are feeling Promoe’s vibe. Capleton walks right into the mic booth during one of his sessions. He finally nails the hook and names the song. Bobby Digital sits down on the floor and finishes Promoe’s oranges. He calls the new song: Songs of Joy. It’s about the handicraft of making music. Infotext: Looptroop
